General Introduction of Muscovite Mica
Muscovite mica is a type of mica that is composed of a group of phyllosilicate minerals that have a layered or platy texture. It has unique properties that are not duplicated by any other known minerals. The crystalline structure of muscovite mica forms the mineral that can be split or delaminated into thin sheets that are
· Platy
· Flexible
· Elastic
· Resilient
· Reflective
· Refractive
· Dielectric
· Chemically inert
· Insulated
· Lightweight, etc.
It is also stable when exposed to extreme temperature, electricity, light and moisture. These combined properties and its other properties contribute to the following application properties:
· Chemical inertness
· Easy dispersion
· High aspect ratio after delamination, thus increased coverage
· Excellent electrical properties
· High temperature stability
· Excellent barrier and reinforcement properties.
Unique Features of Mingmei/MinTech Mica Products
· The aspect ratio of the product is higher than the similar products from other suppliers.
· The product quality is consistent because the QC program is done using test procedures and lab equipment imported from USA.
· The free silica content that is harmful to human body is very low because of strict control on the selection of crude.
· Because high quality mica ore contains as much as or more than 90% muscovite, /Mingmei· MinTech’s dry ground mica products are whiter than most of the dry processed products and are comparable to some of the wet processed products of the same particle size from producers in the USA.
APPLICATIONS
The physical and chemical properties of the muscovite mica make Mingmei/ MinTech’s mica products highly functional mineral additives in numerous applications.
Paints & Coatings
MT-Mica®finely wet ground products can be used in aqueous and solvent-based systems. They mechanically reinforce the paint film and impart greater resistance to chemicals, electricity, heat, and moisture. Paints with mica tend to last longer and have better color retention. In MT-Mica®products, the overlapping of thin layers of plates form a tough shield that improves the paint’s integrity and durability. Because of the barrier property, MT-Mica®products increase the opacity of white opaque pigments, intensify colored pigments, and increase resistance of the paint film to water penetration and weathering. The flakes of MT-Mica® productsact as foci for relieving stress caused by progress oxidation, polymerization and expansion of the substrate. Physically, MT-Mica® products help resist cracking, reduce chalking, and prevent shrinking and shearing of the paint films. MT-Mica® products also promote paint adhesion in both aqueous and solvent-based formulations. Recommended grades for this application are wet ground 325 mesh or finer, such as MT-Mica®325W, 400W, 500W or 1250W.
Rubber
The platy nature of Mingmei/MinTech® product to be an effective inert filler and a mold release compound for the manufacture of molded products such as tires and roofing. The platy texture acts as an anti-blocking, anti-sticking agent. Mingmei/MinTech’s mica products can also be compounded into rubber to reduce gas penetration and help create a uniform pore structure that leads to improved resiliency and reduced shrinkage.’s mica products and their unique thermal properties allow MT-Mica
Plastics
Mingmei/MinTech’s ground mica is used to reinforce thermoplastic composites because of its highly delaminated flake structure. It is used as an extender and filler, especially in parts for automobiles, as lightweight insulation to suppress sound and vibration. It is used in plastic automobile fascia and fenders as a reinforcement material, providing improved mechanical properties, increased strength, stiffness, and dimensional stability. Mica provides better reinforcement because mica reinforces along a plane rather than along a single axis, as is the case with the glass fiber. Addition of MT-Mica® mica results in improved high-heat dimensional stability, flexural strength, chemical resistance, reduced warpage, and the best surface properties of any filled plastic composite.
Roof Coatings
Mingmei/MinTech’s ground mica can be applied in the production of rolled roofing and asphalt shingles to serve as a surface coating to prevent adjacent surfaces from sticking together. The coating is not absorbed by freshly manufactured roofing because mica’s platy structure is unaffected by the acid in asphalt or by weathering conditions.
Joint Compound
MT-Mica® 100C or MT-Mica®200C is used in joint compound formulations developed for taping gypsum wall board joints. Here MT-Mica® helps resist cracking, reduce chalking, and prevent shrinking.
Drilling Mud
Mingmei/MinTech’s ® 60C, can be used in the well-drilling industry as additives to drilling muds. These coarsely ground mica flakes help prevent loss of circulation by sealing porous sections of the drill hole. coarsely ground mica products, such as MT-Mica
Foundry
Mingmei/MinTech® 400C and MT-Mica® 325C, can be used in the manufacture of various foundry core and mold release compounds, mold washes and facing agents. Due to its platy property, mica provides excellent parting and surface properties to the finished casting.’s finely ground mica, such as MT-Mica
Other Applications
The inert chemical property and platy physical form make MT-Mica® a functional additive in many products including: adhesives, caulking compounds, sealant, welding rods, lubricants, cutting oils, and dry powder fire extinguishers. It is also used for decorative coatings on wallpaper, concrete, stucco, and tile surfaces.
